The World Health Organization, The Surgeon General of the United States, and many authorities in Denmark have all identified loneliness as an epidemic on par with smoking and obesity.
Neurologically, the experience of loneliness is the same as actual physical pain. People experiencing loneliness often see it as a void in one’s life to be fixed by some external solution.
Actress Lotte Arnsbjerg, Blues musician Johnny Burgin, and educator Salman A’yan Bandish portray a vision of loneliness as a call of the soul – when one is lonely, it is a signal to confront feelings of emptiness and despair, and to discover and reconnect with one’s true essence and purpose. As Salman presents his lecture, he undergoes an unexpected emotional journey, juxtaposed with visual performance and improvised blues music from Johnny and Lotte. The play ends with a deeply personal meditation session led by Salman.
